Yin Yoga has been described as new, yet ancient. While Paul Grilley has done much to publicize and popularize this form of yoga, he did not invent it. Paul combined three lines of inquiry in a unique way. This is the hallmark of genius. In his own book, Yin Yoga, Paul dedicated his work to three teachers who guided his three lines of inquiry:
- Dr. Gary Parker … who taught him anatomy
- Paulie Zink … who introduced him Daoist Yoga
- Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama … who deepened Paul’s knowledge of Daoism and reminded Paul of yoga’s greater purpose
While Paul has done more than any other individual to spread the teachings about Yin Yoga in the West, its practice goes back thousands of years. In this section we will discover the distant roots of Yin Yoga. We will also hear Paul’s own story, the stories of Dr. Motoyama, and the other great teacher of Yin Yoga, Sarah Powers, whose style of teaching is very different from Paul’s.
