(Or what I did over my summer vacation.) By Bernie Clark October 4, 2024

Who remembers the days when we used to film videos on dedicated hand-held video cameras and not on cell phones? Way back in 2011, I bought myself a Sony Handycam that had a high-definition digital recording capacity of 1920×1080 resolution. Wow! That was amazing. With this magical device, I set about to record a variety of yin yoga postures with commentary of the benefits and options of each pose. I had to learn how to not only record these videos but how to edit them too, adding some music and textual information. This project took up the summer of 2011. The results were posted on YouTube under the username Yinsights1, and all these videos are still up and available for free viewing!
Why Yin Yoga?
Yin Yoga is a unique style of yoga that encourages practitioners to embrace stillness, introspection, and the art of letting go. Unlike the dynamic flows of more yang-oriented styles, Yin Yoga involves staying in poses, with no muscular effort, for an extended period—usually around 3-5 minutes, or even longer in some cases. These relaxed, longer holds allow a deep, sustained stress to penetrate the connective tissues—ligaments, fascia, and joints—promoting flexibility, enhancing circulation, and providing a meditative stillness that soothes the mind. If all you do is an active, muscular style of yoga, yin yoga is the other half of the practice that you might be missing.
A Gateway to Yin Yoga
If you’re curious about exploring Yin Yoga and all its benefits, the YinSights1 YouTube channel is one place to begin. The channel offers dozens of video including an introduction to Yin Yoga, an explanation on how to practice, descriptions of the most commonly used Yin Yoga postures, including contraindications and alternative approaches to the postures, how and why to use props, face yoga, the microcosmic orbit, the biological tipping point, mindfulness practices and much, much more.
Not only are there little 5 to 10-minute vignettes explaining postures and procedures, there are also full length practices available that can range from 30 minute to full 90 minute. To view these, select the playlist tab. Or, on the videos tab, check out the three full-length Yin Yoga Live practices offered there. Also available on the Playlist tab are a collection of excerpts from the Asana at Home Yin Yoga classes with a description of a specific posture or flow. Over the last 13 years many other snippets of yoga have been added, so take some time to poke around and find all the fun stuff.
The videos are designed to cater to a range of experience levels, from beginners who need guidance with the basics to experienced yogis who want to deepen their understanding of the more advanced aspects of Yin Yoga. Feel free to share your comments on each video or ask questions.
