Lotus Pose: Destroyer of Disease, or Destroyer of Knees?
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika boldly states: “Padmasana (lotus pose) is the destroyer of all disease…only the very wise can master it!” As with all ancient spiritual and religious texts, the author did not have to deal with truth-in-advertising laws. For most people, lotus is a high-risk/low-reward posture: If the hips are tight, stress moves into the knees. But for those smart enough to choose the right parents (and thus end up with the right genes), sitting in lotus is a piece of cake, and always has been–even before beginning their yoga practice. So, why are these people so different from the rest of us? What makes them “wise”?
In 2007 we launched the first Yin Yoga Teacher Directory to help students find teachers. Back in those days, Yin Yoga was not very well known, but times have changed. Yin is being taught all over the world, but sometimes finding a local teacher is still not easy. To help you go to the yin-side, we recently updated the directory with a map based search capacity. To navigate the map either type in the city you are looking for in the search box at the top left, or move and zoom the map to the region of interest. Check it out! To be added to the directory, follow the instructions at the end of the paragraph just beneath the map.
A Plethora of Yin Yoga Videos Gaia Yoga (formerly MyYogaOnline) has over 40 different Yin Yoga videos ranging in time from short 20 minute classes to over an hour. They have almost 20 Yin Yoga classes by Bernie Clark, but also videos from many other teachers such as Doug Swenson, Cameron Gilley, and Dina Amsterdam. If you have never watched a Gaia Yoga video, the first month is really reasonable ($.99) so check them out!
Yin is In! Yin Yoga has been with us since the beginning of Hatha Yoga centuries ago. But since the early 19th century, yoga has become more and more yang-like in nature. Everything requires balance: yin completes yang. Yin Yoga is the balancing practice for the more active, muscular yang yogas. There are more and more teachers offering Yin Yoga today, and more workshops and opportunities to learn how to become a Yin Yoga teacher. If diving deeper into the yin-side of life is on your bucket list, there are lots of opportunities for you.
