Is this training only for yoga teachers?

There are no pre-requisites needed to attend the training. While the intention of this training is to allow yoga teachers to add yin yoga to their repertoires (and if you are not yet a yoga teacher, this training will not certify you as one; you will still need to take a 200-hour training if you’d like to teach), many yoga students have taken it, not to become teachers, but to deepen their own personal practices. Anyone who has a thirst to learn can benefit from this training.

Where is the training being held?

The venue for the training is the lovely Granville Island Hotel, located at 1253 Johnson Street, Vancouver, B.C. Check here for directions. We will be in the Bridge room on the ground floor. Students do not have to stay at the hotel but if you are driving, you will have to pay for parking nearby.

Is there parking at the hotel?

The hotel does not have parking available for people who are not staying at the hotel, but there is parking nearby on Granville island.  Parking is free before 11 am and after 6 pm.  Pay parking is in effect 11 am – 6 pm daily at the rate of $3/hour on weekdays and $4/hour on weekends and statutory holidays. Since our training runs from 8am to 4pm, this means you will need to purchase 5 hours of parking each day. You can download this map to see both the location of the hotel (#15) and all the parking spots (marked by the letter P).

What other accommodation options are there?

This document has a list of hotels and hostels you can check out. If you decide to stay at the Granville Island Hotel, mention that you are attending this course and you may receive a 10% discount on your room rate (depending on when you book your room.) It is your responsibility to arrange your own accommodations. The Granville Island hotel is located near the centre of Vancouver, so try not to be too far away in order to avoid traffic delays in getting to the training each morning.

What else should I know about visiting Vancouver?

This document has a list of things to know about visiting Vancouver. If you are coming from outside Canada, please be aware of the visa requirements and plan ahead. Do not leave it to the day of your travel to check out which documents you need to enter Canada.

What are the hours of the training?

The course will begin on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at 8am. Please arrange to arrive at least 15 minutes early to check in and settle in.  There will be a one-hour lunch break each day at 12:00 with the course resuming at 1:00 pm. The day will end at 4:00 pm. This will be the schedule for each day, except the last day, we will end at 3pm. (This will allow students trying to catch transportation home a little extra time.).

Are there places to eat lunch or breakfast?

The Granville Island hotel does have a restaurant but budget conscious students my choose to go to the various food venues and cafes on Granville Island. This map shows the location of places to eat on the island, and this document also includes places you may wish to try out during your stay in Vancouver. No food or beverages will be provided by us during the training, so be prepared to bring with you any drinks and snacks you may need during the day.

Do we need to bring any props or books for the course?

We will not be practicing in a yoga studio so there will be no props provided, which in the era of Covid-19 is probably a good thing. If you are traveling to come to the training and you do not have room in your luggage for many props, you can get by with only a yoga mat and a thick blanket. These can be folded up or rolled up to serve a wide variety of uses. If you have more room in your luggage, blocks, straps, sandbags and bolsters will be handy as well, but they are not required.

The only required text for the course is The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga. You will need to get a copy before the course begins. It is available through Amazon and as an eBook. Any edition of this book will suffice. Other useful books, but not required, are Your Body, Your Yoga, Your Spine, Your Yoga and Your Upper Body, Your Yoga.

Can we leave our props at the venue overnight?

Yes. The room will be locked overnight, so you can leave your props in the room.

How can I join the Facebook Group?

In the welcome email to you, you were given the link and password for the Facebook Group. If you did not receive this email, please let us know.

I am worried about a test. Is there a test?

Don’t worry: this is yin. Everything will be simple. There is no written test, but on the last day you will get to show us how well you have absorbed the material by teaching a one-hour yin yoga class. The plan is to split the group up into many, small classes of just two people: a teacher and a student. After the first teaching practicum is complete, the student will become the teacher; the teacher a student, and the second class will begin. Feedback will be provided to each teacher by the student at the end of each class, and then later there will be a group feedback session.

How can I change the name on my certificate?

This normally costs $200 US/year but you will get the one year access for free. The one year access will begin the day after the course ends. You can find more information about this training here. To receive the 40% discount, please email Nathalie ([email protected]) and she will send you the discount code you need to input during registration.

Can I pay for this training in my own currency?

Our checkout system, Stripe, does allow you to pay with your local currency if you prefer to do so. Stripe will automatically apply a foreign exchange conversion to either the US dollar or Canadian dollar amount you have chosen. You’ll be given this option before completing your purchase, but you will still have to chose either the Canadian price or the US$ price on the registration page.

Why is the price shown in two currencies?

Most of the attendees for our previous in-person trainings have come from outside Canada. These students find it easier to pay for the training in US$. However, many students are from Canada and prefer to pay in Canadian currency. So, we are trying to offer both options. Unfortunately, this could be challenging for us if the exchange rate between the two currencies fluctuates significantly. So, we have fixed the price at $1,295 Cdn. That will not change. However, the US$ equivalent of the price may change if the exchange rate changes significantly. But, once you have paid the full amount in either currency, we will not change the price  regardless of exchange rate changes.

Do I have to use a credit card to pay?

You can use a credit card or pay via via ApplePay or GooglePay. Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to accept debit cards.

Can I pay a deposit instead of the full amount?

Yes, to hold your registration, you can pay a deposit of $200 US or $250 Cdn. This will guarantee you a spot in the course, but you must pay the remaining amount by August 15, 2024 to maintain that guarantee. No deposits will be accepted after August 15th.  Note, however, if you pay the deposit in US$ and the exchange rate does change significantly, the total price for the course may also change. If that happens, your deposit will be applied against the new price. In other words, once you have paid the full price of the training, you will not be at risk for any other changes, but if you only pay a deposit, the full price of the training may still change.

What happens if I have to cancel?

Payments may be refunded in full (less a $50 Cdn processing fee) if canceled before August 15, 2024. If you cancel after August 15, 2024, you will receive a nonrefundable credit (less a $50 processing fee) which will be held for one year from the date of issue. This credit can be used towards Bernie Clark’s 50-hour online or in-person Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings during that one year period. No credit or refund is available if you cancel on September 15, 2024,  or if you do not show up for the training on September 15, 2024, or if you leave the training.

What is your Covid-19 policy?

COVID-19 is still a concern to many people, especially those who are immune compromised. While the risk of transmission in Metro Vancouver, where Granville Island is located, is low, if you do come down with cold or flu symptoms during or before the course, you will be asked to stay away from the class room until you have shown a negative response on a Covid-19 test.

We encourage everyone to monitor themselves for symptoms of Covid-19 or any other illnesses before your arrive. If you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19, we ask you to take a test before coming to the hotel. If you test positive before your arrival, please contact us to reschedule your training for a later course.

If a student tests positive for Covid-19 during the course they must leave the training. Students required to leave due to a positive Covid-19 test may, at no extra cost, take one of Bernie Clark’s 50-hour online Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings during the following one year period.
