Re: sensation of itchiness

Interesting. Did she report any other times when this happens? I wonder if she has synesthesia. Can she smell words? Do numbers have colours?

Re: sensation of itchiness

Hello Yael There are many possible causes of itchiness, so let’s start by removing a few from consideration. Firstly, clothing can cause itchiness, but that is not likely the case here as your student would be itchy all the time, not just while doing yoga. Allergies could also be a cause. Many peopl...

My Health Philosophy and Routine

During the November, 2023 On-line Yin Yoga Teacher Training, I was asked what my personal health and fitness philosophy and routine was. I am always a bit reluctant to go into my own specifics because my process has been constantly evolving over the years and decades. What worked for me 20 years ago...

Re: Yang after yin practice

Hello Cristina How do you feel? I could generalize and say that you should wait after doing a yin practice before doing a yang practice exactly 95 minutes, but that is pure speculation. How long it takes your body to recover from any creep created in your practice is specific to you, and what you di...

Re: Wall Yin and Spine

Hello Stephanie Thanks for posting your question. Firstly, I would love to ask your student what he meant by “difficult” and exactly where he felt any discomfort. Legs up the wall can cause tingling and pins and needle feelings in the legs for some students. Is this what he meant? (If so, he can bri...

Re: Is yang stretching needed

Hello Amber My general philosophy is that physical health has three main axes: strength, endurance and mobility. The best way to build strength is through resistance training (like lifting weights); the best way to increase endurance is through cardiovascular exercise such as sprinting, climbing sta...

Yin Yoga before Running?

Hello Patti This is a good question and the answer is yes, no and maybe! It depends! I have addressed this question in other places so perhaps I can just give you the links here for you to read over. Cheers Bernie Yin Yoga and Running Addressing the concern that athletes should not do Yin Yoga Yin Y...

It seems the earlier picture of "the Dorsi" is not loading so, trying again. Here it is, courtesy of Zeynep Aksoy.

Re: Below knee amputee and energy imbalance

Hello Durward I am not a TCM therapist so would love to hear from those who are what they think about your questions, but from my understanding, the meridians are embodied and physical. They are not “virtual”. If someone has lost a limb, that part of the meridians that used to flow within that limb ...

Re: Is this yin yoga?

Hi Kami Firstly, let’s try to avoid judging any person or posture by its appearance. Aesthetics is irrelevant. Instead, let’s ask, “What sort of experience is the person in the pose having?” Secondly, let’s try a definition of what makes a posture a yin pose. There are a few ways we could go, but he...

Re: Sacral Iliac Joint Hypermobile

Hello Claudia I am sorry to hear about your ongoing pain. I would agree that if someone has a hypermobile sacroiliac joint, the priority should be to build stability there. Muscular exercises and even restraining belts can help. However, sciatica is usually not a symptom of SIJ instability. If you a...

Re: Can creep become less creepy?!

Hello Kumari Creep is not a bad thing. Our fascial tissue are viscoelastic, which is a good thing. (To learn more about viscoelasticity, see this primer for yoga students .) Our tissues, like any material with either lengthen under a constant load and over time (creep) or if the length (called strai...

That sounds encouraging. As you say, it may be a coincidence, but please let us know if you continue to feel better after a few weeks of doing Yin Yoga.

Good luck!

Re: Hot Yin

There is no doubt that sweating can be healthy, when done appropriately and in moderation. However, in order to induce sweating the body has to be in a heated condition. This internal heat can come from sustained exertion (yang) or from the exterior environment (yang). In either case, the muscles wi...

Re: Yin Sequence Featuring Grilley's Archetypal Poses

Yes, that could work but I would suggest you batch all the spinal flexion postures together so it may be more like

Butterfly (Caterpillar)
Deer (Shoelace)
Dragonfly (Dragonfly)
Seal (Saddle)
Twist (Twist)
Shavasana

Good luck!
