Re: Block Therapy

Helllo Anna I am not very familiar with Block Therapy, but I gather it is another form of fascial release which includes a block (made of bamboo?) to apply a compressive stress to the body similar to other massage balls and rollers, and employs postures, breathwork and mindfulness. It sounds like ma...

Re: Carrying Angle article

Yes, your video does show the effects of your carrying angle. Notice how when your arms are down at your side, the hands are further away from your body than your elbows are and this continues as you elevate your hands. That is a clear indication of the carrying angle. And, that is okay! Thanks for ...

Cataracts and Yin Yoga

I recently received the following question from D: I have not seen this question discussed: What are the safest yin poses to do during the first week of recovery after cataract surgery? I practice yin and vinyasa at home and will be undergoing cataract surgery in a few days. I know inversions in whi...

Re: Types of Stretching, Fascia, and Yin

Yes, today we include ligaments, tendons, and joint capsules as being fascial tissues. There are even some researchers who want to include bones as fascia. It is a fast changing field! While we generally say "ligaments join bone to bone and tendons join muscle to bone" Jaap has determined that ligam...

Re: Types of Stretching, Fascia, and Yin

You are welcome. Just to be complete, there certainly are different kinds of fascia. A committee in 2019 came up with this definition [from Schleip R Hedley G, YucesoyCA. Fascial Nomenclature: Update on Related Consensus Process. Clinical Anatomy32:929–933 (2019). ]: 1.A fascia is a sheath, a sheet,...

Re: Types of Stretching, Fascia, and Yin

First, let’s make sure we define yin appropriately in this context. Yin Yoga practices involve long-held, static stresses which are passive. By passive, we mean that we are not engaging muscles to create the stress but using the posture (and the body’s weight or sand bags) to generate the stresses. ...

Re: Question on Ankle Anatomy & Poses

What you describe is not unusual. Many people are like your student. My book Your Body, Your Yoga describes how often this happens and what to do about it. I would highly recommend you add it to your library. Given his unique bony structure, there is no point in trying to force your student's body i...

Yin after Yang or not?

I was recently asked the following questions: Hi Bernie, I hope all is well with you. In your book, there was a mention: "When to practice yin yoga: before an active yang exercise." However, I recall you suggesting that after yin yoga, due to the fragility of our tissues, it's best not to engage in ...

Re: External rotation in Bridge, Sphinx and Seal

Hi Kontoryoga. Thanks for reaching out. I would never specify “How much external rotation” at the hip socket that a student needs in a pose because the answer is always, “it depends!” The bony limits to external rotation vary dramatically from one student to another, and this is due to the unique sh...

Re: Sandbags used in dangling posture

if she is very flexible in the hips, then Dangling really won't create much flexion in the thoracic spine or neck; it will all come from flexion of the hips, and lumbar spine flexion. She may get some traction, an axial extension of the spine. If she desires more mid to upper back flexion stress, th...

Re: Sandbags used in dangling posture

Hello Lochana Thanks for your post. I would love to know more about this particular student. Is she not feeling anything because she is super flexible and just flops over, or is it because she is so stiff that she can't get into the poses? All your ideas are worth exploring as long as you are advisi...

Re: UB meridian and dry mouth

That is a very good question, and I am going to try answer your question by not answering your question (because you didn’t actually ask a quesion ). Human nature is such that we often look to a proximal event to explain something that has happened. For example, if you emit a loud burp, it mus...

Retrolisthesis advice

I was recently asked about retrolisthesis. Here is the question: I am looking for some insight on ways to help a student with Retrolisthesis. I've searched the forum, your Complete Guide to Yin Yoga book, and other websites, but cannot find too much information on it. I know the biggest rule is how ...
