Re: Scoliosis Blog Article and Back Pain

Hello Beth Part of what you are considering a “deep lumbar” curve is often a more horizontally orientated sacrum. Some people (human variations!) have a sacrum much more horizontal than others (I talk about this in the book Your Spine, Your Yoga …see the online appendix called Pelvic Parameters and ...

Re: locust versus floor bow prasarita Paddotanasana sciatica

Hi Liz. The estimate of the amount of force generated by the “superman pose” comes from the work of Stuart McGill. I don’t think he has ever studied Bow Pose, however, so I can only estimate what that would be like. In my opinion, as the hands are holding the feet and the posture is not maintained s...

Re: Scoliosis Blog Article and Back Pain

As you have discovered, we are not symmetric, and that is okay! My latest book has a whole section on asymmetries and how they may or may not affect us or our yoga practice. Many people have one leg slightly shorter or longer than the other, but this asymmetry does not require addressing: we can be ...

Piezoelectricity enhances healing of cartilage in the knee

Hot off the press: Many yinsters know about piezoelectricity...the tiny currents of electricity created when we stress our tissues (tension or compression). Well, here is an interesting study for all the kneedy people (people with knee issues): University of Connecticut researchers have regrown knee...

Re: Below knee amputee and energy imbalance

Hi Claire This is an interesting topic. Often students who have had a gall bladder removed have a similar question. First, let's remember that the acupuncture meridians are bilaterally symmetric, which means you have two—one on each side (you have a "back-up"). Second, the Organs in the Daois...

Hyaluronic acid

I recently received the following question: I am not sure if there is an answer to this question. But with all the research I have done reading through your amazing research, I am understanding that the production of Hyaluronic Acid is a result of stressing the joints in Yin yoga. When this happens ...

Re: Erector spinae not one of the targeted myofascial groups?

Hello René

Paul Grilley includes the erector spinae in what he categorizes as the 10th myofascial group. "Thoracolumbar Muscles: Folding forward stretches them, standing up or lifting something up contracts and strengthens them."

Re: More Name Variations for YIN Yoga Poses and the Rebound

Hi Britt Thanks for writing. Every body is different. That's pretty obvious, but its implications are vast. It means that what works for one person may not work for another. If you feel that your body is really fragile when you finish a yin pose, lying still in a mini-shavasana and watching the "reb...

Re: Hero pose and helping with knee pain

Hi Mick. Nice to hear from you. When I was originally introduced to the practice of sitting on the heels with dowling behind them I was told that it was creating space in the knees. This seems a lovely visualization, however, I am not sure that this was actually prying apart the femur and tibia. Rat...
