Hamstring pain

Post by Bernie »

I was recently asked the following:
  • Hi, my name is Lily. I have recently started yoga. I do a LOT of dance. Awhile ago both of my thigh areas felt tight and I had like a sharp tearing feel in my thighs, kind by my hamstrings. Whenever I do a very little straddle it hurts very bad. There is no signs on my legs that have bruising or anything. I can't figure out what it is. This has been happening lately but normally it is only in one of my legs. It won't heal either. So, i was wondering if you knew what it was?
As always, Lily, I am not a doctor or therapist and from the sounds of your pain, I would recommend you do see a professional about this. It sounds to me like you may have slightly torn your hamstring tendon or perhaps your adductors. A specialist should be able to tell more precisely.

I have had something similar: a slight hamstring tendon tear. It wouldn't heal because I kept teaching yoga and demonstrating forward folds. I finally had to resolve to stop doing any forward bends until the pain stopped. It took over 6 months of zero tolerance, but eventually the pain did go away. I don't know if this is what happened to you, but it does sound similar. Tendons and ligaments do take a long time to heal, so be patient.

Regardless of exactly what is causing the pain, I would suggest you stop doing any movements that recreate the pain. Give the area time to heal. Slight movements may be okay as long as they do not hurt at all.

Good luck!
