Yoga and sacroiliac pain

Post by Bernie »

Hi Gabriela

I am sorry to say, answering your question is not so easy nor simple: first we must determine the cause of the pain. Without knowing the cause, how can we prescribe a cure? We could end up doing more harm than good. Can you provide more background please?
  • What are the symptoms?
How long have you had these symptoms?
    What makes the pain worse?
Have you seen a doctor or a physiotherapist?
If so, what have they suggested?
What is your general health background?
How much yoga have you done?
    What is your occupation?
How active is your lifestyle (other sports, eating habits, etc.)
If you can provide your background, maybe we can offer you some suggestions.

Cheers

Hi Bernie, thanks for your response and I so appologies that its taken me so long to reply, I will try my best to answer each of your questions.
1.The symptoms are like a pinching pain just above my right gluts and it travels inside my right groin, it is worse at the end of my day and it subsides during my sleep.
2.I've had this pain for the last 15 months
3. i have paid close attention recently and there are some yoga poses (external hip rotators) that triggers my pain, also if I am sitting down and turn my torso to the right.
3. Yes I have seen a specialist, I've had 2 MRI's one of my right hip and one of my lower back and they both come back normal, which is very frustrating, no arthritis, no hernias, no bursitis., they suggested that I had a cortisone shot, which I did a month ago and guess what, they pain is back with the exact intensity.
4. I am a healthy person, with a mild form of Sickle Cell anemia , I am lucky to run high fetal hemoglobin which protects me from having crisis.
5. I have practised yoga on and off for the last 13 years, however I recently got my certification as a yoga instructor.
6. I am a part-time yoga instructor and part-time housewife
7. I beleive I lead a healthy lifestyle, dont drink, dont smoke, practise yoga daily.

Thanks for taking the time to write back, I do appreciate it.

Mystery pain

Post by Bernie »

Hi Gabriela

Thanks for a more complete explanation of what you are experiencing. I am sorry that no one has found the cause of your pain yet, and, of course, without knowing the cause, it is very hard to work out a treatment plan. Unfortunately, I don't think that I can help you very much: I am not a doctor, nor a physiotherapist and I can't work with you one-on-one either. All I can suggest is you keep trying to find someone who will look deeply with you. This journey will require that you become your own doctor! Everyone else is just part of your consulting team, but you will have to determine what really works for you.

Here are some speculations that I can offer for you to consider/check out:
  • I am not surprised to hear that MRIs didn't pick up anything. MRIs are great for some things, but soft tissues like fascia are not well imaged by MRI. It seems that ultrasound is better for that.

The fact that you were offered cortisone suggests deep inflammation: you may want to try Earthing and see if that makes a difference. It certainly has for many people. (See this link to an article I wrote on Earthing.)

The fact that the pain "travels" as you say suggests some sort of nerve impingement such as sciatica. That is so obvious that I am sure you have considered this already, but just in case you haven't, here is another article I wrote on what to do about two kinds of sciatica.

Finally, there is a rather famous physiotherapist name Erik Dalton who has several DVDs and videos on his web site addressing sacral misalignments and the problems they can cause. You may want to contact him for further help.
I hope these suggestions offer you some help.
Cheers
