Left or right?

Hi Lydia As far as I can tell there are two reasons we roll to our right after shavasana: one physical and the other energetic. Physically, it is felt that since the heart has a larger presence in the left side of the chest, rolling to the right places less pressure on it. While this is true, I doub...

Will do the listing at the end of April

Hi Scott

Thanks for the listing info. I am off on a retreat in Vietnam until the end of April. I will get to your posting when I get back. Sorry for the delay, but internet access here is limited.

cheers

Is it Yin?

Hi Lydia Like you, I believe that if you don't let the pose "soak in" or, as I like to call it, "marinate", then it is not yin ... at least not with respect to the deeper tissues we target in the yin style. Engaging the muscles is fine, but if the intent is to go deeper, we must relax the muscles. c...

Butterfly then Caterpillar?

Hi Lydia ... First, I see no problem doing a couple of forward bends in a row to start a class. Unlike the yang styles, it is not necessary to do a counter pose right after each asana. It is nice sometimes to do a bit of movement between the poses, to get the juices flowing again, but often I will s...

When to do Yin Yoga...

Hi Mary ... I am hoping some others may weigh on the first question you raise, but for the second half: you may want to refer to YinSights. I address this question of when to do Yin Yoga at this page

Sunday March 4, 2007

Hey Moksaman: here is a sequence I used in my class last night (it was a 75 min class). The theme was the Kidneys Butterfly - 4 mins Snail (option: Caterpillar) - 4 mins Straddle fold over right leg, with twist half way through - 4 mins Straddle fold over lef leg, with twist half way through - 4 min...

Vertigo

Hi Desena ... Thanks for posting the question here: it is an interesting and potentially scary situation. Firstly, we should remember something that Paul Grilley often says, "not every pose is right for every body". Even though 99.99% of your students will never have any problem with Dangling pose o...

So what is Yin Yoga?

Hmmm ... good question: that was the reason for creating YinSights in the first place: to answer that very question. There are many ways to do the various yin postures: mostly the alternatives are not "better" than the some other one, just different. It all depends on what you are trying to do. If w...

Other poses for bad knees

Hi again As to which poses to avoid, obviously avoid any poses that feel uncomfortable. As long as the knee is damaged, you need to let it heal: so zero tolerance for any small tweaky-feelings in that area. [Remember, little tweaks become big tweaks, and big tweaks become expensive operations!] Lotu...

Torn meniscus

Hi BRGal ... welcome to the Kula. Hopefully others will share their views on this topic, but it is one that I am intimately familiar with. I tore both of my medial menisci and looked high and low for some yoga therapy that would help them. I even had chances to ask some pretty senior teachers about ...

Hi Mary ... I tried the page on my other computer and the links do come up. So there might be something wrong with my browser settings. Probably a problem on my side, not yours.

Changes made

Hi Mary

I made the change to your bio. Also, thanks for adding the link back to us, however when I visit your link page, all that comes up is a blank page. I wonder what is going on there?

Cheers

Students who are cursed by being flexible

Hi Amber ... good question. I often see super-flexies in my Yin Yoga classes. They don't feel much, but there are still benefits for them in these poses. Firstly, they are keeping the range of motion they currently have. Over the years, even the flexies will get tighter as their joints shrink-wrap w...
