Yang lines and contemplation

Hi Julie - interesting point about the caterpillar and a quiet state of mind. I think generally all forward bends are calming in that respect. Most yoga teachers will prescribe forward bends to calm a student, while back bends are found to be alivening and energizing. Perhaps this has to do with wha...

Yoga for amputees

Hi Anita ... welcome to the Kula. First, let me address your question on doing Yin Yoga, even without a lower leg. YES YOU CAN! I can understand how doing a yang practice could be a big challenge for you, especially the standing poses, but there are very few Yin Yoga poses that require you to stand....

Dantiens, kanda, kandastana and triple burner

Sean, thanks for the link to your research on the kanda. That was useful. I think Island Yogini's question also concerned the other areas as well as the kanda. As you point out, the kanda, or "bulb" is often tought to be right below the perineum or tailbone. The dantiens however are in three locatio...

You are in the directory, Mary

Hi Mary, welcome to the Yin Yoga teacher's directory. I took the picture from your web page. If I may make a suggestion, your bio doesn't actually talk about any Yin Yoga experience. Perhaps you would like to add something to it? And I also noticed your "links" page on your web site doesn't show any...

Epigenetics

Hey everyone ... Paul Grilley and I have just been talking a bit about a new way at looking at genetics. The common belief in science is that we are pre-wired by our parents and once our DNA is set, it ain't going to change. Well...maybe not. There is growing evidence that what we do also affects an...

What indications might a student feel if it is too much?

Julie/Jenny ... thanks for the prompt replies. (I miss the kula too Julie...thus this kula board  ) My initial sense was that as long as the student doesn't feel any pain or even major discomfort AND is fully healed mild hip openers yin poses should be ok. Jenny you said your doctor husband ur...

How to teach someone with dual hip replacements?

Does anyone have any experience or advice about how to teach (in a class setting, not a private) a man who has had both hips replaced? With those hunks of metal binding his femur and hip ... do we avoid any hip openers and just have him do work on the spine? I have a student who loves Yin Yoga and w...
