Re: Student who has large bulks of muscles of the lower body

I suggested the Sit-Rise test only as a way to mark progress in improving mobility. If at the start of his training his score was, say 3 for example, but after 6 months he scored 6, that would be excellent progress. There is always danger in training for the test, in which case he only gets better a...

Muscle scraping (guasha)

I was recently asked the following question: I’m wondering what you think of “muscle scraping.” I have a 21-year old friend who is into weightlifting, and I have just recently heard about these muscle scrapers, like the Sidekick Tool. Is this a bona fide therapeutic tool and technique? Thanks so muc...

Re: Calcified tendon

Hello Jo. The fact that your client has a diagnosis leads me to believe that she has seen a health care specialist. So, my first question would be — what did she suggest? A calcified tendon (also called calcific tendonitis ) can happen anywhere, but most commonly it occurs in the shoulder. It is cau...

Re: Yin Yoga for people with herniated discs

Thecal sac impingement on the nerve roots can be caused by so many things: spinal stenosis, scoliosis, congenital deformation of the bony areas nearby, osteoarthritic changes, and probably many other things that I am not aware of. In G’s case, the diagnosis is a disc bulge. I can imagine that since ...

Re: do clothing layers effect yin stress?

Hi Kumari I don't believe anyone has ever studied this question so I can only speculate, but I strongly believe that the amount of clothing worn will have very little effect on the practice. (Maybe if you are wearing stiff blue jeans, they will prevent you from getting to your edge.) I think you wou...

Re: Why can't I straighten my arm?

Please expand your question as it is not clear what you are referring to. What do you mean by Is it normal if my arms don't straighten after my first workout and there is pain whenever I try to straighten them? Does your arm straighten before your workout? Was there pain before your workout? Does it...

Yin Yoga for people with herniated discs

I was recently asked the following questions about a student doing Yin Yoga with herniated discs: G has history of 2 herniated discs L4/L5 & L5/S1, many years experience with hatha yoga, is a very dedicated and mindful student, interested in Yin but concerned about it. G is ok in forward bending as ...

What happens during Shavasana?

I was recently asked the following question, "What happens during Shavasana?" Wow! This is a big topic. There are so many ways to address the question. What follows are my first thoughts....enjoy! Bernie “Lying down on the ground, like a corpse, is called Shavasana. It removes fatigue and gives res...

Re: clarity about muscles in yin

Can I help you "fully" understand what is happening to our muscles during a yin yoga posture? Probably not . It depends on so many things. But if you want to dive deeper into the science of muscle stretching, I would suggest you read these two articles in the YinSights Newsletters: What are th...

Re: Student who has large bulks of muscles of the lower body

Hi Kate…thanks for using the Forum to ask your question. I guess I would begin answering you by asking you a few more questions! Let’s start with — what is your husband’s intention in taking up Yin Yoga? (I can imagine many possible answers, ranging from a desire to get more flexible to a desire to ...

The screaming part is pulling the back foot to the buttocks. That is a lovely way to stress the quads. :D (See Swan for details.)

Re: Alternative to Saddle Pose

Hi Rita! Nice to hear from you. For students who just can’t get comfortable in Saddle, I would suggest an alternative. Which alternative depends upon which areas you are targeting. If it is the quads, you could choose windshield wipers. Screaming Swan and Dragons can also get at the quads. If the ta...

Re: Groin problems

Hello Tina I am not a doctor and I have not personally examined your student so I can only speculate as to what is happening with her, but like you I suspect some sort of nervous interaction. However, I don’t believe this is due to a particular nerve being damaged, but rather a sensitivity of her mu...
