Cataracts and Yin Yoga

I recently received the following question from D: I have not seen this question discussed: What are the safest yin poses to do during the first week of recovery after cataract surgery? I practice yin and vinyasa at home and will be undergoing cataract surgery in a few days. I know inversions in whi...

Yin after Yang or not?

I was recently asked the following questions: Hi Bernie, I hope all is well with you. In your book, there was a mention: "When to practice yin yoga: before an active yang exercise." However, I recall you suggesting that after yin yoga, due to the fragility of our tissues, it's best not to engage in ...

Re: External rotation in Bridge, Sphinx and Seal

Hi Kontoryoga. Thanks for reaching out. I would never specify “How much external rotation” at the hip socket that a student needs in a pose because the answer is always, “it depends!” The bony limits to external rotation vary dramatically from one student to another, and this is due to the unique sh...

Re: Sandbags used in dangling posture

if she is very flexible in the hips, then Dangling really won't create much flexion in the thoracic spine or neck; it will all come from flexion of the hips, and lumbar spine flexion. She may get some traction, an axial extension of the spine. If she desires more mid to upper back flexion stress, th...

Re: Sandbags used in dangling posture

Hello Lochana Thanks for your post. I would love to know more about this particular student. Is she not feeling anything because she is super flexible and just flops over, or is it because she is so stiff that she can't get into the poses? All your ideas are worth exploring as long as you are advisi...

Elderly student with hip replacement and bad knees

I recently recieved the following questions: I have your book - T he Complete guide to Yin Yoga and have been reading up on the Hip in the book as a guideline but I would still like more info please. I know you can assist me with some pointers and caution on some asanas with a client. She is an elde...

Retrolisthesis advice

I was recently asked about retrolisthesis. Here is the question: I am looking for some insight on ways to help a student with Retrolisthesis. I've searched the forum, your Complete Guide to Yin Yoga book, and other websites, but cannot find too much information on it. I know the biggest rule is how ...

Re: Wall Yin and Spine

Hello Stephanie Thanks for posting your question. Firstly, I would love to ask your student what he meant by “difficult” and exactly where he felt any discomfort. Legs up the wall can cause tingling and pins and needle feelings in the legs for some students. Is this what he meant? (If so, he can bri...

Re: Below knee amputee and energy imbalance

Hello Durward I am not a TCM therapist so would love to hear from those who are what they think about your questions, but from my understanding, the meridians are embodied and physical. They are not “virtual”. If someone has lost a limb, that part of the meridians that used to flow within that limb ...

Re: Sacral Iliac Joint Hypermobile

Hello Claudia I am sorry to hear about your ongoing pain. I would agree that if someone has a hypermobile sacroiliac joint, the priority should be to build stability there. Muscular exercises and even restraining belts can help. However, sciatica is usually not a symptom of SIJ instability. If you a...

Re: Yin Sequence Featuring Grilley's Archetypal Poses

Yes, that could work but I would suggest you batch all the spinal flexion postures together so it may be more like

Butterfly (Caterpillar)
Deer (Shoelace)
Dragonfly (Dragonfly)
Seal (Saddle)
Twist (Twist)
Shavasana

Good luck!
