Sphinx : alternatives and options

Hi Bernie, My question is about Sphinx pose. I practise it sometimes in two different ways and I'd like to know if it's okay. The first option is an usual Sphinx but with a slight sidebend. In the second option just one leg keeps straight and the other leg is like it is in full frog. Are these alter...

Thank you Bernie for answering.

The part of my body stretched is different when the sitting bones are off the floor than when they are on the floor so I understand now that both can be okay and it only depends on which part of the body I want to stress.

Cheers.
Christophe.

Half butterfly and sitting bones

Dear Bernie, In half butterfly, one leg is stretched straight to the side. When I fold forward down the middle between both legs, is is okay if the sitting bone of this straight leg isn't firmly on the floor, especially when I want to open the leg a little wider or is it better to open the leg less ...

Thank you Bernie. Your answer helps me to understand how easy it is to think in a wrong way. When I was suggesting a supported mild fish pose, it was with a block under the head in order to avoid stress on the neck...isn't it ok this way ? Maybe is it then more restorative yoga than yin. Cheers Chri...

Hi Bernie. What is the idea behind Butterfly because nowadays, when we look at older people, a lot of them are « forward folded » ; one of their problem seems to be an unopen heart. From a physical point of view, when there is no time for a full session, a moderate backbend like a mild supported f...

Thank you for your answer Bernie. The question is then : when can the forward bend be practiced and when should it be totally avoided. I guess that as long as the student does not feel pain when practicing, he can go on with this pose, but isn't there nevertheless any risk of aggravation afterwards ...

Hi Bernie, You wrote : "One major caution: sciatica can be made worse by seated forward bends." That's why, in The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga, you said that Caterpillar can aggravate sciatica. It seems not to be the case with Dangling. Does it mean that, in case of sciatica, only seated forward bend...
