Re: Scoliosis Blog Article and Back Pain

All this is just to say that, maybe what you consider to be a deep lordosis is simply the angle of your sacrum! Bernie, I'm sorry I never responded to this very helpful post from a few years back! Thank you - it's interesting to think that the shape of my bones (sacral slope) might be the key. I ha...

Yin Sequence Featuring Grilley's Archetypal Poses

I was thinking about planning a class that would focus on helping students learn how they can adjust their own bodies in poses/chose different poses that work best for their bodies. To do this, I was thinking about including one pose from each of Grilley's archetypal poses, so the class would be jus...

Re: Can't target fascia?

Bernie, sorry about the delayed recognition of your response; I very much appreciate your analysis! I appreciate Jenny's work too, but sometimes I think she argues points that no one was making. For example, her assertion that "you can't target fascia in an isolated way" - who said that you could? A...

Re: Scoliosis Blog Article and Back Pain

I have a follow up question. I have a deep lumbar curve, which I think is part genetics (my bottom is larger and sticks out, exaggerating my personal S curve) and part a pattern of anterior pelvic tilt. Fully reclined saddle has always been challenging for me, as I can't seem to find a position that...

Re: Scoliosis Blog Article and Back Pain

On further reflection, I have a follow-up question. I have a bit of lumbar lordosis, some of which I think is my natural body shape (ie, I have a larger bottom that protrudes, so this tends to make my S shape more exaggerated) and some of which I think is an anterior pelvic tilt that I've developed ...

Bernie, I appreciate all the tips! I think revisiting McGill's work is a great idea.

Scoliosis Blog Article and Back Pain

Bernie, thank you so much for your recent blog post about scoliosis! As always, your wisdom is much appreciated. I've never been diagnosed with scoliosis, although I had one of my own teachers ask me this once. I have been told (by an orthopedist) that my left leg is slightly shorter than my right. ...

Re: Different types of Yin Yoga

To the OP Claire, I feel the same way as you about becoming "pickier" about yin! My (online) yin teacher also studied directly under Paul Grilley, and the type of yin I prefer is more along with what you described. Sometimes I do yin with YouTube videos, and I have to hunt to find practices with lon...

Re: Yin yoga and therapy balls

I know that this post is old, but I thought I would reply anyway. Pre-pandemic I taught some classes where we did both ball rolling and yin - students loved it! I generally used the balls first too. Perhaps the balls help to start the process of targeting the connective tissues? You can defin...

Re: Yin yoga and healthy bone

First, thanks for the tip about notifications; I do have that box checked, but they only email I ever get is the newsletter. Guess I just have to remember to come to the site more often! :D Second, thanks for the info on the leg length differences. I knew it was common (I think my difference is 3/8"...

Re: Yin yoga and healthy bone

Thank you again! Part of the reason I asked is b/c for some of the postures targeting the outer hip/glute area, I tend to get a stronger sensation in my right hip (the osteopenia one) than my left. It's not uncomfortable and feels like an appropriate age, but I wonder if I should back off from stret...

Re: Yin yoga and healthy bone

Thanks Bernie! That's actually what I have been trying to do - i.e., I am drawn to more passive forms of yoga (yin and restorative), but I am trying to work more yang postures back in, especially standing postures/the poses recommended by Dr. Fishman. I've done regular weight training since my 20s b...

Re: Yin yoga and healthy bone

Bernie, thanks as always for the great info! I found this post when doing a search for osteopenia. I'm 53, a regular exerciser and a yoga teacher, and I was just had a first DEXA scan and was diagnosed as having mild osteopenia in my right hip (at least my spine looked good!). I am planning to be mo...

Re: Suggestions for Up-to-Down Sequence

Sorry for the delayed response; thanks so much for these additional suggestions! I have been doing an occasional Friday night yin class at the studio where I teach, doing many of the poses at the wall; students seem to be enjoying it.
