Anarebecca, How funny to see your topic first off! I was coming over here to link to my new article series on the chakras! (It's over at The Yoga Lunchbox at: http://theyogalunchbox.co.nz/2011/04/09/chakra-vinyasa-meeting-the-energy-body/ ). I will be posting poses to work with each center and a Yin...

Additionally, we don't need to label each and every tear's cause - just saying 'thank you and goodbye' can work wonders. Somedays the root of emotion will be crystal clear, other days not so much. Release with gratitude on exhale and ask for something that will serve you, your intention, on inhale, ...

Bernie and Lorien have hit most of your major point, Alea, but I'd like to weigh in from an energetic adjustment point. Let's call them assists, though, as the word we use for this is very important... The first energetic assist I give, I give to the class as a whole as part of the pose instructions...

Frank, I'm still sussing these same topics out myself but wanted to share the resource that's assisting it to come clear for me: Sarah Powers' book Insight Yoga - she has chapters for each of the organ pairs with overviews on the realm of the body they govern and it's communicated in a way that keep...

Sequencing for the Meridians

While I myself enjoy doing several poses on one side before repeating on the second side, I am unsure if there is any benefit in this manner of sequencing when the target is the meridians and energy body rather than the physical body. Anybody care to weigh in? Thanks in advance!

My Happy Body Short Sequence

Here is the 30 minute quick fix I often find useful to practice: Sukhasana Forward Fold 5 minutes each side Sphinx 5 minutes Eka Pada Rajakapotasana/Swan, upright or sleeping depends on the day and my body 5 minutes each side Supta Baddha Konasana/Reclining Cobbler 5 minutes If there is time, I do a...

I was talking with a friend about some of this discussion when I remembered something: while it's easy to convert to the three Abrahamic religions, those not born into the hindu faith cannot convert. It was a very kind Indian I met at a friend's party who told me this ages ago. I think we started th...

Yes, at first the physical aspect of yoga will be what we focus on. But even then: figuring out how long we can stay and if we should rest pull in several very important concepts: truthfulness about our body's capabilities, non-violence in not pushing beyond our current physical limitations. What I ...

Any yoga that involves the body is a type of Hatha Yoga. Right now it sounds like you are probably not matched to a studio/style/teacher that bests fits you, where you are; while you may like them or the sequences, I'm sensing that you feel uncomfortable bringing these concerns to them. I would thin...

Vincent, thanks so much for bringing all this up! I read your post then took my dog for a walk and I was very content reflecting on it. This, then, is a long response I've had lots of people in my classes, and most I don't know the religious/spiritual faith of. In a general classes where I've chosen...

Hey Vincent! Glad to hear you had a positive first Yin experience! I got the privilege of leading two of my friends through a Yin routine this weekend and hearing how much they enjoyed it was really delightful. I did tell them, part way through, that feeling fragile was an indicator that they were p...

This is the sequence I ended up leading my friends through when my Insight Yoga dvd biffed in in the player. It was a totally instinctual series that left everyone feeling open, balanced, and more stable emotionally - I was alarmed and agitated from not getting my passport and visa, and one of my fr...

I just downloaded Stevin McNamara's Prana Groove and I am in love with it. Very unobtrusive, and pretty when I am attentive enough to be mindful of it!

Am now eagerly awaiting Jai Uttal's volume 2 of Music for Yoga and Other Joys, called Bhakti Bazaar.

I agree, if you want to move in a softer way through vinyasa: Moon Salutes are a lovely way to go. Shiva Rea has one with chants that are very soothing and slow. In practicing them I feel like the Yin aspect is more the bhavana, the feeling intention, of the practice than the tissue targeting action...

Sarah Powers' Book on Breath in Yin

Just found these passages in Sarah Powers' book, Insight Yoga, and thought I'd share them. I got silly excited when I came across them and how on topic they were to us. I should maybe go through my notes from my classes with Sarah, but I don't recall any explicit discussion about how/why to breath o...
